PACOIMA - For homeowner Evalyn Burnie, the hard knocks were the lightest blows leading to the near-loss of her home.
First came breast cancer. Then the loss of her clerical job, which prompted her to refinance the family home with a controversial adjustable-rate mortgage. Then came the brink.
"I'm in a hole and I can't get out of it," Burnie said Thursday, standing in the kitchen of the green stucco home where she grew up. "But I'd like to."
Burnie, 53, joined a throng of affordable-housing advocates as they announced the expansion of a program aimed at saving homeowners at risk of foreclosure.
During a community fair Saturday, experts will be available to connect homeowners with the Home Equity Loss Prevention program, administered by ACORN Housing.
Lenders such as Countrywide Finance and American Home Mortgage Servicing will be available to negotiate new terms with debtors, and loan counselors and public-interest lawyers will also be available for consultation
