In these hard times for the auto industry, even BMW is in no mood to take risks.
After pushing the boundaries of technology and style with its last 7 Series sedan, the Bavarian carmaker is steering clear of controversy with the all-new flagship it unveiled in Paris this week.
The redesigned model has a more traditional appearance than the radically restyled 7 Series launched in 2001, and the technology is less likely to overwhelm the driver.
"They've mellowed it a little," said Christoph Sturmer, an auto analyst in Frankfurt, Germany, and co-author of "Premium Power," a study of luxury car brands. "The prerequisite for a vehicle in this segment is that it must be elegant, and this 7 Series does a much better job of being elegant and discreet than the previous one."
