Barbeques Galore, a privately held retailer of barbecue grills and accessories, has filed for bankruptcy protection, another victim of the housing downturn that has claimed several other home-furnishing chains.
The Carlsbad, Calif.-based retailer filed for Chapter 11 protection at U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Woodland Hills, listing assets and debts of $10 million to $50 million each.
With more than 70 retail stores in California and seven other states, Barbeques Galore claims to be the world's largest specialty retailer of barbecues and accessories. It has locations in Tarzana, Studio City, Glendale, Valencia, Westlake Village and Simi Valley.
In a sworn statement, CEO Jeffrey Sears blamed the real-estate crisis for the company's financial woes.
