Civil cases in deadly Santa Monica Farmers' Market set

Jury selection is scheduled to begin Monday in the three remaining civil cases stemming from the Santa Monica farmers' market tragedy of July 2003, when 10 people were killed by an out-of-control car driven by an 86-year-old man.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge William A. MacLauglin issued a series of pretrial rulings Thursday, including one that forbids the plaintiffs' lawyers -- absent approval from the judge -- from mentioning to jurors during the trial that vehicles are now parked on both ends of the market to reduce the likelihood of a recurrence of what happened that day.

Had those vehicles been in place that day, the accident could have been prevented, said Geoffrey S. Wells, an attorney for one group of plaintiffs.
