Three dead in wrong-way crash on I-5

Three people were killed today and two others critically injured in a wrongway crash that shut down the southbound Santa Ana (5) Freeway in Commerce before the start of the morning commute, authorities said.

The accident on the southbound Santa Ana Freeway just south of Slauson Avenue was reported around 3:10 a.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Patrick Kimball said.

The driver of a compact car headed north in the southbound lanes collided head-on with another vehicle, killing three people, a CHP officer told an RMG News camera crew at the scene.

Among those who died was a man in his 20s and two women in their 20s, Kimball said. Their names were not immediately released.

According to RMG, the man who died was the wrongway driver, and both women were passengers in the other vehicle, which also had two other injured motorists.
