ANAHEIM - Things didn't go very well in 1971 the first time around, either.
Wearing retro jerseys modeled after the little 'a' logo from that year, the Angels seemed to be too caught up in Thursday's '70s Night' promotion, paying homage to that sub-.500 team (last in the American League in runs scored, but third in ERA) by losing 4-3 to the Chicago White Sox.
The Angels scored twice in the first inning but then stranded nine baserunners in the game - eight in scoring position - to waste a solid start by Jon Garland and leave the score tied going into the ninth inning.
"You don't want to leave that many out there," Angels centerfielder Torii Hunter said. "You want to get it done."
The White Sox rallied for the winning run in the top of the ninth against Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez, making one of his infrequent appearances in a non-save situation.
