ANAHEIM - His mistake in Wednesday's loss to the Chicago White Sox notwithstanding, Erick Aybar has been everything the Angels had hoped for as a replacement to Orlando Cabrera.
Aybar wasn't even the Opening Day shortstop, but make no mistake, the Angels had the 24-year old pointed toward the starting spot even before the surprise trade of Orlando Cabrera to the Chicago White Sox this offseason.
With unexpected power, speed, a strong arm and steely nerves on hard-hit grounders, what's not to like?
It doesn't mean Aybar is a finished product. In the eighth inning Wednesday night against the White Sox, with the score tied, Aybar went to the hole to field a ground ball hit by, of all people, Cabrera.
Perhaps Aybar wanted to show Cabrera firsthand what he is capable of doing as the new headmaster of the Angel Stadium infield. When holding the ball would have been the right idea, Aybar instead threw off-balance toward first base and over the head of Casey Kotchman
