PAINTER ON GOLF: NTO needs to slash costly ticket prices

PACIFIC PALISADES - Jerry West smiled and clapped and gave thanks during the Northern Trust Open trophy presentation at the 18th green Sunday at Riviera Country Club.

He caught a cold and cough during the week. As soon as West arrived at the media center, he plopped down in the nearest chair.

West, 71, had just put the finishing touches on his first year as the Northern Trust Open's executive director. He barely slept the past few weeks because when he puts his name on something, he wants it to go well. West wants to give back to Los Angeles, and he's heading this tournament largely because of the platform in which he can give back to charity.

He increased the profile of the tournament and once the numbers are crunched, he's expected to have helped raise the corporate dollars and charitable contributions and led some successful initiatives.
