PACIFIC PALISADES - Steve Stricker knows what it's like to be in professional golf's version of purgatory.
In the mid-2000s, he finished so low on the yearly money list three consecutive years that he lost his playing privileges on the PGA Tour. He was left seeking sponsor's exemptions into tournaments, then facing the pressure of having to finish in the top 10 just to be able to play again the next week.
He slipped to 337th in the world rankings, akin to being a C-list celebrity in Hollywood.
You can now roll out the red carpet for the 42-year-old from Wisconsin.
Stricker held off all challengers Sunday in the final round of the Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club, not only thwarting Phil Mickelson's bid for a third consecutive title but also wresting the second spot in the world golf rankings away from the left-hander with a two-stroke victory
