HRA Evolution of sport began in Pomona

POMONA - Once again, the drag racing season will start at historic Pomona Raceway this week, with the milestone 50th anniversary of the Winternationals.

Much has changed in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series from its last Fairplex appearance at the Auto Club Finals in November. The differences from the first Winternationals in 1960 to Sunday's final eliminations are difficult to comprehend at one sitting.

Second only to the U.S. Nationals in NHRA longevity, the Winternationals represented the dream put together by Wally Parks, the sanctioning body's founder. It was part of his plan to take racing off the streets and to a venue that ensured a level playing field for the competitors.
