This month will mark the third try by Ontario to join the world's top sports and entertainment venues when it opens the doors to the $150 million Citizens Business Bank Arena.
Third?
Sure, between 1970 and 1981, the Ontario Motor Speedway was the site of world-class Indy-car and stock-car races as well as large outdoor concerts before closing its doors in a sea of red ink.
But there was another?
Well, it actually never went very far but more than a half-century ago, a desolate stretch of sand near today's Ontario-Fontana border almost became the West's first major motorsports speedway.
It was called the Los Angeles International Motor Raceway, a $12 million plan to build the largest auto-racing course west of Indianapolis in spring of 1956.
It was planned south of the new San Bernardino Freeway between Etiwanda and Wineville avenues, and just north of the San Bernardino-Riverside county line and the Mira Loma Air Force Depot
