Southland Muslims horrified by shooting rampage

Across Los Angeles, residents recoiled in horror at the news an Army psychiatrist had allegedly killed 13 soldiers and wounded dozens more.

But the Fort Hood, Texas, rampage allegedly carried out by Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan Thursday was especially disturbing to Muslim-Americans.

"We said, 'This is a nut job,"' said Salam Al-Marayati, executive director of the Los Angeles-based Muslim Public Affairs Council, who lives in Sunland. "This is an isolated incident. This was someone who snapped.

"There was no religious justification for it."

Al-Marayati said his entire organization extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of all those killed and wounded.

Aside from worries that the shooting could reflect badly on other Muslim-Americans, psychologists and criminologists said it also raised questions on how future tragedies could be prevented.
