Cleric leaders, congregational volunteers, medical students and community activists will link hands and hearts to help more than 1,200 homeless, low-income families, senior citizens and homebound disabled residents this Thanksgiving.
When community patron Dena Shacklett and the Rev. Wayne Derrick, then senior pastor of Pomona Valley Christian Church, started a breakfast program for homeless Pomona residents in 1987, they did it with a big bang.
"That first Thanksgiving, we fed 2,000 people," said the Rev. Herbert Wilkins, then the church's assistant pastor and now senior pastor. "Dena and her husband got the word out through their ministry and fliers to different churches asking for volunteers and help. We provided the building and much more manpower. We served at the church and also delivered boxes of food to families in need."
