Pomonans of all ages urged to read more
When Sabrina Myers, 5, reads a book, her parents put money into her college fund. Elias Jauregui, 8, prefers reading at school because there's enough "peace and quiet" there for him to concentrate.
Sabrina and 500 Inland Valley children who took part in the Big Read Family Fall Festival on Oct. 25 at Cal Poly Pomona Downtown Center agreed with Elias' assertion: "reading makes you smart."
Children's attendance is always high during monthly family fun events at the university center at Second and Main streets, said center manager Jonnie Owens and parents Jerry and Korry Myers, Brenda Jauregui, Martina Tucker and Angela and Eric Martinez Sr.
Owens said that linking the event with themes focusing on community, social and cultural issues gives it "flavor."
"Our themes also have the ulterior motive of getting kids to realize the arts and reading connect to everything," she said
