Humboldt squid have moved into Southern California waters in mass. The local news has been all over the story as the Cephalopod express marches north.
Squid of more than 60 pounds are being taken by most Southern California landings as interest has peaked.
Marine biologists from the Long Beach Aquarium contacted Don Ashley of Pierpoint Landing and planned on being aboard the Enterprise out of Long Beach Marina Sportfishing Thursday night.
There is something intriguing, even creepy about these denizens from the deep. Humboldt squid can reach up to 6 feet and weigh as much as 100 pounds.
They attain that size during their one-year life-span by voraciously feeding on everything in their path. They hunt in schools, sometimes 1,000 strong, swimming up to 15 mph. They can eject themselves from the water to escape predators.
Humboldt squid are very aggressive creatures with more than 36,000 teeth and a huge beak used to tear into their prey
