PAINTER: Mickelson weighs in on Woods' absence from PGA Tour

SAN DIEGO -- Phil Mickelson wasted no time addressing the Tiger in the room.

Mickelson, the No. 2 golfer in the world, made his first public comments since Tiger Woods admitted to affairs and announced an indefinite absence from the PGA Tour. Mickelson discussed Woods - albeit briefly - at a news conference at the Farmers Insurance Open.

He talked about Woods before he even addressed his svelte figure, newfound confidence, groove changes, the health of his family or upcoming schedule.

Mickelson didn't wait to be battered with questions about when he thought Woods would return or how he figured Woods' game would be affected.

Woods and his team could have benefited from Mickelson's carefully crafted statement addressing the issue head-on.

Mickelson took the microphone, said he was excited to be back at Torrey Pines, where he's won three times, and said he had some issues to address.
