Commentary: Stevenson's death leaves so many somber - Longtime El Segundo High baseball coach was an institution in the school, community

A lot of people in El Segundo and beyond are trying to figure out what to do following the death of John Stevenson.

He was so much a part of the fabric of the city for such a long time.

What do you do after the death of an icon?

Where do you gather to honor him?

Who follows him as coach of the El Segundo High baseball team, the Eagles, the team he coached so well for half a century?

When does the baseball team resume winter workouts?

The last question is the easiest to answer.

Today.

Stevenson would be extremely upset - he'd call it something less politically correct - if the Eagles were not on Stevenson Field today working on fundamentals in preparation for their winter league game Saturday.

"He'd hit me with a bat if we didn't practice," said Craig Cousins, his former player, longtime assistant coach, close friend and now the new El Segundo coach.
