MY TURN: When lobster dinner arrives alive

Recently a friend brought me two lobsters.

I love lobster dinners. But I like my lobsters delivered to me by a waiter, with the inside of the lobster neatly separated from its shell. All I have to do is take a piece of lobster on a fork, dip it into butter and enjoy.

But the two lobsters were clinging to their shells and one of them was still alive.

I had no idea how to prepare them. My cooking ability is limited to boiling eggs.

I called a friend who is a gourmet cook for help. She instructed me to boil water and, as it was boiling, drop a lobster into the water for three to five minutes, add condiments and bon appetit.

"But one is alive," I told her.

"Makes no difference," she said, "just drop him into the boiling water.

"That's like murder," I told her. "I can't kill a living thing."

She tried to placate me. "He dies instantly. He won't feel a thing."
