Unrestricted free agent Ron Artest reportedly has agreed to join the Lakers. Details were scarce, but Artest told a reporter for CBSSports.com he has agreed this afternoon to sign with the defending NBA champions.
While the volatile Artest was meeting with Lakers officials, Trevor Ariza was in Las Vegas talking to officials from the Houston Rockets. Ariza met with Rockets coach Rick Adelman and GM Daryl Morey, according to agent David Lee.
The league's free agent negotiating period began at 9 p.m. Tuesday. Teams can't sign free agents until next Wednesday, however. A Lakers spokesperson declined to comment.
"I'm definitely going to L.A. -- to sign, yeah," Artest told Ken Berger of CBSSports.com in a phone interview. "Lakers, Lakers, Lakers. I'm in L.A. right now."
Artest also said he met with Lakers team owner Jerry Buss on Thursday. He was set to huddle with his financial manager, whose office is in LA. Agent David Bauman would join them there
