Torrance council, school district discuss holding joint elections

Seeking to increase voter turnout and save money, the Torrance City Council and school board have begun initial talks about holding joint elections.

The move would set the two agencies up to trim election costs as revenue streams remain low.

In an election, the city and school district are responsible for paying the county for polling places, poll workers and ballots. A joint election would allow the two agencies to share those expenses.

Members of the Citizen Development and Enrichment Committee gathered in a City Hall meeting room Monday to begin the discussion on consolidating the elections - an idea first raised in November at a joint City Council-school board meeting.

A price tag on running a single election would depend on the number of candidates and measures on the ballot; estimates from the Los Angeles county clerk range from $235,000 to $260,000.
