Three incumbents are seeking to remain on the board of the Lennox School District in Tuesday's election.
But in a testament to growing community participation, four challengers are seeking to unseat them.
The incumbents - Marisol Cruz, Maria Verduzco-Smith, and Maribel Amaya - are running on a record of rising test scores in the majority-Latino district.
They are also given credit for averting teacher layoffs in the ongoing budget crisis.
"We're kicking butt in our (test) scores," said Larry Lamadrid, the president of the Lennox Teachers Association, which has endorsed all three incumbents. "For this board to suffer any kind of change would be devastating."
But the challengers - including, most notably, Juan Navarro and Sonia Saldana - allege that the current board's accomplishments have come at a cost.
Among their chief concerns is the reassignment last year of the principal at Buford Elementary School, Martha Padilla
