As the district still reels from years of financial chaos and notoriously low student achievement, leaders elected on Tuesday to guide Centinela Valley schools can expect a busy, if not challenging, term.
Seven candidates are vying for three open area-specific seats on the Centinela Valley Union School District Board of Education.
In an effort to gain a voting majority, incumbents Francisco Talavera and Rudy Salas are running as a slate Nov. 3 with newcomer Jessica Felix. They face incumbent Rocio Pizano, Maritza Molina and Hugo Rojas. Also running is Susie Diaz.
Also hovering over the district is the potential unification of the Wiseburn School District, a K-8 agency seeking to build its own comprehensive high school.
None of the candidates took a firm stance on the unification, agreeing that if the proposal is approved in Sacramento, a subsequent vote should include all area voters.
