When the votes are tallied in Rancho Palos Verdes next week, the city will get a glimpse into its hazy political future.
That's because the candidates chosen by voters for two open City Council seats will become the municipality's senior elected officials by 2011. That's when term limits will force three current council members - Tom Long, Doug Stern and Steve Wolowicz - out of office, forming an entirely new council in just two years.
It's a crucial election for a city that has had essentially the same political leadership since 2003, when longtime council members were ousted.
One of the members of that old guard - former Mayor John McTaggart - is among the seven candidates attracted to this year's race by the lack of incumbents and the chance to shape the city's future.
The two who win Tuesday's election will replace Mayor Larry Clark and former Councilman Peter Gardiner, who died in July and whose seat has been temporarily filled by another former councilman, Ken Dyda
