Retired pilot, teacher vie for Hawthorne city clerk's seat

Two longtime Hawthorne activists and volunteers - a retired pilot and a teacher - are facing off for the city clerk's seat in the Nov. 3 election.

Norb Huber, 54, and Pat Carey, 63, hope to claim the spot being vacated by Angie English, who is running for City Council. Neither have held elective office before.

The main duties of the clerk are to manage council meetings, maintain records, publish legal notices, and oversee elections. The part-time position comes with a $10,000 annual salary and health benefits.

It is a largely administrative job but the clerk must also deal with political issues as he or she facilitates council meetings, answers questions from the public and elected officials, and keeps campaign finance forms and other documents.

Carey and Huber vow to be independent-minded, if elected.
