At a time when the Hawthorne School District is grappling with funding cuts from the state and the looming retirement of a veteran superintendent, only one incumbent board member is seeking another term in the Nov. 3 election.
Board President Shannon Brann has moved out of district boundaries, making her ineligible to serve, and Vice President Hugo Rojas is vying for a seat on the Centinela Valley Union High School District board.
Additionally, board member Alexandre Monteiro, elected in 2007, is running for a seat on the Hawthorne City Council. If elected, Monteiro would vacate his seat, and board members would seek a replacement to complete the remaining two-years on his term.
The only incumbent seeking re-election is Nilo Michelin, who was first elected to the Hawthorne school board in 2001.
Michelin faces three challengers: Eugene Krank, John Vargas and Nadia Barrera. Neither Michelin nor Barrera could be reached for comment on their candidacies.
