Move to punish Toyota could backfire on state - State lawmakers are playing games with Toyota, and trifling with the welfare of the state and its residents.

A committee has voted to require that at least 50 percent of every vehicle purchased for the state Assembly's fleet be made and assembled in the United States - making Toyota models such as the Prius ineligible.

The Japanese carmaker, which employs thousands in the South Bay, wouldn't be the only company affected, and some Toyota models would meet the new standard. But right now, the majority of the fleet cars are Toyotas. Thus the idea, South Bay Assemblyman Ted Lieu says, is to draw attention to Toyota policies that are harming the state, including its decision to stop using a manufacturing plant that was located in the San Francisco Bay Area after the state provided financial incentives. He also notes the sales boost Toyota received because California allowed drivers with cars like the Prius the opportunity to drive alone in carpool lanes.
