Tips to prevent burglaries
Areawide. As one security company puts it: Don't let burglars steal Christmas.
Security experts from Protection One, a monitored security service headquartered in Kansas, offer the following tips for making Christmas safer:
Don't leave empty boxes that once contained high-priced items like TVs, video game systems, computers, etc., in plain sight next to your trash cans.
Remove objects that might allow access to your home, such as ladders or trash cans that could be used to enter a window or scale a fence.
Don't post public notices on Facebook or Twitter letting people know you're out of town.
Turn your telephone ringer down so no one outside can hear repeated rings. Review your answering machine message to make sure it doesn't imply you are away.
Never leave a key hidden outside. Burglars know all the best hiding places
