Areawide. The Torrance Police Department offers these tips for safer online shopping:

Shop only at well-known and trusted sites that you can access directly by typing the address into a Web browser. Do not click on links or advertisements from unsolicited e-mails as unauthorized online retail pages that appear identical to a reputable site can be made.

Always look for the security icon - a locked padlock or unbroken key symbol - in the window or check to see if the Web site begins with https. You can research a company through the Better Business Bureau.

Only shop with companies that offer a guarantee and/or warranty.

Read and understand the shipping, return and privacy policies before making any purchase. These policies will provide information on what the seller is gathering from you, how the information will be used, and how you can stop the process.
