Winter driving safety
Statewide. The California Highway Patrol offers these tips for winter driving safety:
Many crashes are caused by driving too fast for road conditions. The first and foremost tip is to slow down. Your vehicle can't stop as fast or turn as accurately on wet or icy pavement.
Prepare by leaving early and allowing yourself plenty of time to get where you are going.
Stay aware of weather and road condition reports through your local media. Road and traffic condition reports are available on the CHP Web site, www.chp.ca.gov . Current highway conditions and planned lane closures are available on the California Department of Transportation Web site, www.dot.ca.gov/ . Current highway conditions also are available by calling toll-free 800-427-7623.
If you are heading to the mountains, bring chains and warm, waterproof clothing. Make sure your gas tank is full.
