In 1994, about the time I got engaged to my future wife, I purchased an 11-year-old Subaru DL.
My then-fiancee Nisreen nicknamed that faded-yellow sedan "the banana."
Wrong fruit.
She should have invoked the lemon because I had one problem after another with that car.
As a result, to this day, any time I see a Subaru I wonder what the poor schmuck who drives it must be going through.
I admit that is an irrational reaction since I have never personally heard anyone else complain about their Subaru.
Plus, at the time, I spent a lot of time traversing bumpy rural roads that surely contributed to my car troubles.
Despite my more rational hindsight, Subaru has lost me as a customer for life.
I am not alone. My father frequently vows never to buy another Ford because of problems our family experienced with a Thunderbird and Mustang more than two decades ago.
My father continues to make his assertion despite Ford's vast improvement in quality since the mid-1980s
