Help tell the stories behind war memorial's names

"We mouth the words. We gather at a place like this and say that we'll never forget. But the fact is, we do forget," Gerald Ronan said as we stood together in light rain near the Torrance Civic Center's Memorial Wall.

Ronan, 84, spent 37 years teaching at Torrance High and knew all too well some of the 146 fallen soldiers whose names appear on a gleaming black granite surface topped with the name of our best known veteran, Torrance-born Ted Tanouye.

Sacrifice is sacrifice and death is death.

Still, Tanouye - who was only 25 years old when he died - had to come out of the Rohwer War Relocation Center in Arkansas, where he was being held with his entire family, in order to die for his country.
