What's going on in the parking lot of McMaster Park? It's been going on for quite awhile. They're drilling or something. How long are they going to be there?

On Oct. 1, crews started drilling what officials believe will yield the city's first new water well in 45 years at McMaster Park, a Breeze story reported Oct. 2.

The only other city well, which also is in the park on Artesia Boulevard, operates at only about half the productivity it once did after part of its well casing collapsed a couple of years ago, the story reported.

In September, the City Council approved the $900,000 project to drill a new one nearby, the story said.

If all goes as planned, the new well should produce around what the old one did at its peak, which would represent approximately 5 percent of the city's drinking- water supply.
